The order was for four boxes, each one with a different Christmas design, and the name of the the child. It was fun to make them, and to figure out how to do it with machines that weren’t exactly designed to handle that size. I was still pretty new to building boxes, but loved the challange. Which just by the way, is what I love about custom orders the most. The challange of creating something that not I but someone else imagines. <\/p>\n\n\n

In the centre is enough space for a fairly large photograph. On the back is a triangular hanger for the customers convenience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But boxes and picture frames aren’t all I do, here is another custom order where I was asked to create a custom welcome sign. The sign is made with pine wood, laser engraved and then stained and covered with several protective layers of polyurethane. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nThen just before Christmas I discovered, thanks to my daughter, exotic woods. She brought me some hardwoods I had never used or even heard before. Like tiger-wood, purple heart and wenge plus some others. I was inspired and just the idea to use these beautiful woods made me itch to get into my workshop. This is a box I made for my son’s girlfriend for Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n

As you can see, this box looks different then any I made before. That’s because not only did I try my hand on inlays, but also on using resin in the lid design. The black lines are wenge, a naturally very dark and nicely grained wood. In the top design I used wenge and purple heart wood. The centre is engraved with some peonies and the spaces filled with resin, in which I set some plastic flowers. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nWhen I was almost done with the box, I decided to add another layer of wenge to the lid. Which I think came out looking great. Then I added a small tray for rings and such. I had a lot of fun making this one, learning to do inlays and playing around with the different kinds of wood. The only thing I didn’t like much was the waiting for the resin to cure. Patience isn’t exactly a virtue I have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
